Fighting the Spiritual War Against Your Mind

So many today are battling mentally. More and more believers are dealing with mental battles such as feelings of loneliness, despair, depression, suicidal thoughts, hopelessness etc. It is my observation that the battle against the mind of believers has grown fervently in the last year and is getting increasingly hotter. What can we do?

As an individual who has personally dealt with all of the above and some, as well as watched, encouraged and prayed for others through such moments, I would like to offer some suggestions to help you combat the onslaught.

As believers traveling through this wicked world we have to guard our minds. I imagine if God were to let us see the demonic realm at work around us, we would realize just how much effort is made against us – and just how much God shelters us from; thank you Jesus!

But our path is not a smooth one. Ours is an uphill battle because the enemy desires to keep us from God’s holy way. So what can we do to protect ourselves against the efforts of the enemy that do reach us? I’m glad you asked.

Our senses of sight and hearing are powerful. To guard our mind we have to guard our ears and eyes; here are some ways we can do just that.

What you hear affects your mind. What are you allowing in through your ears? Many professing believers today believe they can listen to anything secular they want and not be affected. They fill up on secular music, secular movies/television programming and always have their ears ready for the latest gossip etc. With these individuals I must beg to differ. Do a little research and you will quickly discover just how demonic most, if not all of these secular offerings are.

If you want to protect your mind in the heat of battle then guard your ears! Be particular about what you allow in through them.

Listen to

Good (Biblically sound) music

The Word of God

Biblically sound messages/testimonies

Seek conversation that edifies your spirit instead of only strengthening your flesh

What in the world are you looking at?! That is an important question to answer. Our brains are like sponges, waiting eagerly to soak up whatever is put before it. It is especially adept at quickly picking up and holding tight the wrong things. Therefore, we must be particular about what we feed our minds.

Do not feast your eye and ears on the offerings of this world. Look at things that

Reinforce truth

Cause you to think about what’s important

Help bring understanding of the Word of God

Help encourage you in the way of righteousness

To guard is to protect. If we are on guard we are on the lookout, watching carefully so as not to be caught off guard by the enemy’s attacks. We should be protecting our heart and mind at all times.

The Word of God is part of our armor. It is the weapon with which we fight the enemy’s attacks. The Word helps us fight temptations, it encourages, helps strengthen our faith etc… We will not be successful in this war for our minds without our Sword, the Word of God. So we must train ourselves to use the armor and weapon God gave us for trekking through this world.

Keeping our minds occupied with the right things ca help fight off those feelings of depression, despair, discouragement etc. Filling our minds with the Word of God and those encouraging things based on it will give us something to fight with when the enemy starts whispering lies in effort to bring us down. The choice is ours, we control what we eat, and we will inevitably deal with the consequences of our decision.

    Thank you for sharing Juanita.
I have been experiencing battling of the mind for a long time until the Lord spoke to me to fight back that I’m not facing the oppressors alone—He (God) is with me. I got depressed, lonely fearful, despaired over my life which me weary from the fight wondering how long Lord, how long? Well, when there is all left to do but stand, I stand. My declarations have been I will not curse God and die—I shall live in Jesus name! I am not giving up!

Jeremiah 29:11-14 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Strength for the journey Saints, if God be for us NOTHING can stand against us!

Thank you for blessing us with your
    testimony Juanita.

    1. Hi Genetta!
Living in the End Times as we are, many believers are experiencing increased attacks against their minds. Sometimes you can feel deep despair or melancholy for no apparent reason.
It is a product of these times. The enemy is making every effort to get believers to tuck tail and run away from God instead of drawing closer to Him. We have to fight it. It is
so important that we resist such attacks, and pray for one another in this war. Stay strong, continue to declare the Word of God and stay in the race!
      God bless you 🙂

Thank you for this blog! I so agree that the battle of the mind is real and can hurt. I deal with depression and know that I need God and His Word always. I just know the worldly things are making the spiritual war so much harder for all. It’s all over the news and social media constantly. I thank God and give Him all the glory for helping all of us! Bless You!!

    1. Hello Tammy,
Thank you for reading and comenting on the post. I am thankful that you found it beneficial. I know from experience where you are coming from.
Worldly things are a trap and, in my honest opinion, to be avoided as much as possible–nowadays more than ever before. I do not watch the news everyday, and I am particular about my social media usage. Guarding our minds is no joke today; it is serious business. God is our helper, as you said. Where would any of us be without him?! God bless you sister. Praying for you

  4. Juanita, this topic is something we must revisit daily. The battle of the mind is real. That’s why Ephesians 6 takes on battle imagery to describe this spiritual warfare. Thank you for the powerful reminders. We must guard every part of ourselves, hiding ourselves in Christ and His Word. Bless you!

    1. Hi Melissa,
